Referral

What is a Referral?

A “referral” is a request to a specialist or a consultant physician for investigation, opinion, treatment and/or management of a condition or problem or for the performance of a specific examination(s) or test(s).

Why do I need a Referral? A Medicare benefit is payable on consultations and procedures with Dr Rhau where another specialist, physician or general practitioner has referred. Dr Rhau can accept referrals from Physiotherapists, however no Medicare or health fund rebates would apply, therefore it is imperative you obtain a referral. This is particularly important if you intend on proceeding with a surgical procedure.

Period for which Referral is Valid A referral is valid for the period specified in the referral and is taken to commence on the date of the Dr Rhau’s first consultation or service.

Specialist to Specialist Referrals Should you be referred to Dr Rhau by another specialist, the referral will be valid for a period of 3 months from your first visit or service date. Your general practitioner will be kept informed of your progress.

Referrals by General Practitioners Where the referral originates from a general practitioner the referral is valid for a period of 12 months, unless indicated otherwise.
